-- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
This is the passage from whence I derived my username. I love the language Fitzgerald uses in this passage - "the colossal vitality of his illusion." I love the prospect of an illusion being vital - lifelike, almost tangible, so real that you feel as if you could reach out and touch it. This is the nature of Gatsby's illusion. But I also feel that it is the nature of so many of the illusions that we hold ourselves.
That is why I chose the term "vital illusion" for my writing journal. Because that is, I feel, what writing really is. It is a vital illusion. A false world so lifelike that sometimes we feel as if we are really there, amidst the words and figures and landmarks of our fantasy. We submerse ourselves in the written work, both of others and of ourselves, to escape reality, if only for a moment. To escape to an illusion so vital, we may nearly believe it to be real.
