There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams – not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.

-- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is the passage from whence I derived my username. I love the language Fitzgerald uses in this passage - "the colossal vitality of his illusion." I love the prospect of an illusion being vital - lifelike, almost tangible, so real that you feel as if you could reach out and touch it. This is the nature of Gatsby's illusion. But I also feel that it is the nature of so many of the illusions that we hold ourselves.

That is why I chose the term "vital illusion" for my writing journal. Because that is, I feel, what writing really is. It is a vital illusion. A false world so lifelike that sometimes we feel as if we are really there, amidst the words and figures and landmarks of our fantasy. We submerse ourselves in the written work, both of others and of ourselves, to escape reality, if only for a moment. To escape to an illusion so vital, we may nearly believe it to be real.
